Generation X: Getting to Know the Unknown Variable

"Generation X" is a phenomenon that has taken the established status quo of America by surprise. The generation was born roughly between 1964 and 1978. When they started coming of age in the 1980s, the entertainment industry began a new era of movies, many of which were trying to target this new youth market...

...and TV shows..."

Abortion was legalized in 1973, and women with children or who desired to have them were looked down upon as burdens to society. Single-parent homes became the rule rather than the exception, and "Latchkey-kidism" was so widespread that now the phrase has become cliche'.

This generation grew up mainly in the 1980s, and had a very different climate in which to grow up. Since music has always been a vital channel with which to convey attitudes and statements, and since the generation is so diverse, what better way to frame the tone of the times than with music? The link below will take you to a site containing loads of information about 80s music, movies, events, and other pop culture facts.

To taste more of this 80s climate, follow the door through one of the popular songs below and see what surprises that leads you to! (And resources on some of the issues each of these songs addressed.)

I have packed these pages with links to sites that may provide help and information on the related topics that the songs addressed. I hope these links will be useful to anyone needing help or information in dealing with any of these areas.
